Hi Alice, thanks for the encouragement, it means alot. Yes, you get a workout with babies!! whether you want one or not lol!! two weeks ago was in a bad flare, couldnt even walk without holding onto furniture. Was told of by rheumy for not contacting them. I know i have to pace myself, but sometimes you have to go with the flow re the little ones, cant stop halfway home etc, when out with them!! Anyway, glad you enjoyed your walk this evening, its lovely weather for it too. Keep us posted and motivated, take care xSmile

Good morning, I'm hoping to join this here club. I've just got the RA under enough control to start exercising again, plan is in my blog.

Very interested in the Wii sports trainer - the reviews on Amazon are resoundingly good. Hope I can get that. I did 15 minutes of the Wii Fit aerobics yesterday morning before I had to go and catch up with my family. I was astounded to enjoy the feeling of moving with stable joints again. Humira hooray!

I am quite active, have had to be through the evil days with onset at birth of my 2nd child. I'm afraid while I sometimes enjoy a long fast walk with the buggy while child sleeps if the older one is at school, on the whole I get very bored now in playgrounds and woods etc. It's not as much fun as it could be. The Wii has been, and swimming has always been my thing, big time. Can't wait:)

I'm gong to look up the resistance stuff now, though I don't have athens authentication anymore, so will probably not be able to get whole articles.

cheers love...and once she pops she just can't stop.
dropped back to say I made the most of playground today - lovely one in woods, near playing fields. So I've run 6x100m dashes (beaten each time by my 5 year old and my own laughter) and spent 5 minutes on really big swings feeling the movement bite my arm muscles and abs.
off singing now for 5 hours, which while not aerobic at least keeps me on my feet and away from the cheese supplies :)

AND i've ordered the EA sports active thingy and resistance band. xfx

Hey! Hey! Hey! Looks as though we have definitely got off the ground with this blog. I am delighted by the enthusiasm and mutual encouragement and support. This is what we all needed, eh? The more the merrier, I am sure you will agree.

As for me, thank goodness I keep a daily symptoms diary (- you know the kind: a table with the date on the left column against coded letters for various joints of the body + a "comments" section along the top row). I have now discovered that when I was last off Enbrel earlier this year, I got a flare-up on the fourth week not, as I could have sworn from memory, that the symptoms had gone away after 3 weeks of being re-instated on it. So, this flare up I have had in the last week is similar to the timing of the previous one. So I have been fretting for nothing!!! Tongue I am now hopeful that things will settle down within the next week.ThumpUp

Anyway, I couldn't go walking today because my knees felt sore. So, Christine, I have joined you in spirit with swimming instead. Minimal movement of elbows and knees in backstroke and front stroke swimming, which suited me fine. Thoroughly enjoyed my 14 x 25m lengths in as many minutes only I had to stop because of some minor dizziness and nausea. Silly me had forgotten to take a snack mid-morning (I eat every 3 hours, even if it's only a fruit) and more water before exercising because I was busy sleeping this morning after breakfastSmile So I was probably touched by a bit of dehydration.

Mandy - have a look at the 10-min exercise DVDs which are flooding supermarket outlets at present. Some of them have got great ideas for exercises with stability balls. I'm assuming you have the ok from your rheumy team. If so, I still think it's best if someone teaches you how to use it. The first time I tried to exercise on my own on a stability ball I rolled backwards and landed on my back against some gym equipment! BigGrin So, do be careful, there are techniques for these things.

Rose - what you are describing about exercising by walking to the doctor's and back is great. It is called "minimal behavioural change" which is a proven technique for increasing your activity level. It's based on the idea that if you start by increasing your activity level with small steps, this will encourage you to gradually increase your fitness levels and motivate you to do more. You have probablyt heard the advice although not by that name: e.g. parking at the far end of the supermarket, climbing stairs rather than using the lift, walking to post that letter rather than taking the car, etc.

Liz - the latest key reference for the effects of high intensity resistance training in patients with RA comes from Lemmey's research team in the University of Bangor, in Wales. The reference for the study is: Lemmey AB et al. Arthritis and Rheumatism (Arthritis Care & Research), volume 61, number 12, December 15, 2009, pp 1726-1734.

My hands are better than yesterday. Hurray!

Alice

hope you feel better lizzie.
i'm popping by in that tiresome new convert way to tigger about my Wii activity today, 30 minutes, thigh/leg/waist exercises and yoga plus 10 minutes on the free step which you can do while watching tv! exciting new discovery..i will be able to exercise myself and my mind at the same time in future...i'll watch 30 minutes of only connect while the wii chugs away with me on the step.

finally bit the bullet and did a bit of a weigh in after 3 months of healthy eating and no steroids. i don't know what i started out at but i am over the moon to be well back ensconced in the 16st range.

Hi Alice,

Well today was back to my routine, 40 / calf muscle exercises and 40 / back and arm and chest exercises. Then 100 steps on my stepper. Then 20 on my ab cruncher and then a variety of stretches. I also bought Dance on Broadway for the wii Its amazing I did about 30 mins on that too.

Thats it for today, This is definitely working I have lost another 2 lbs, thats almost 1 stone. The exercise has toned me up so I fit some clothes I liked and couldn't get into. The best part is I didn't think I would show loss as quick. I feel really good and I hope it continues to show a positive outcome.

Good luck to all today Lorna x ThumpUp ThumpUp ThumpUp

Rest day for me. They recommend at least one if not two days of complete rest from exercise for non-RAs so for me it's definitely two, sometimes three days a week. Hands marginally better, I'm glad to say.
Lizzy, so long as you are ironing first with one hand/arm then with the other for symmetry BigGrin
Keep up the good work all, and please don't see it as tiresome to tell us what you are doing here. That's the whole point of mutual encouragement!

Exciting 7am session at the gym on my work to work: measuring my fitness with a personal trainer. 30% body fat (the range for women is 25-30% so I've just made it). I'm not overweight so this must be to do with what they call "RA cachexia": for the same body weight between someone with and without RA, the person with RA will have lost more muscle so have a higher percentage of body fat. So, boys and gals, let's go out there and kick some more...!

He took out the pin out of the shoulder press machine so that it wouldn't have any added weights and I still fatigued after only 10 reps!Smile But I managed to lift a bar with 5kg for a deadlift. For the squat, he taught me how to do it (without using my temporarily sore hands) by holding the bar against my body cradled in my elbows. He teased me because he said I might look a bit funny holding it like that but then I said you look funny doing squats anyway. He, he. Really enjoyed the compound upper body exercises on the stability ball. Such a feeling of POWER to blast this horrid illness.

Ah, envy you your personal trainer at the gym:)! We need a couple of big contracts and i'll get one next year.

<holds breath>

That paper was about full on resistance training, but mentioned things like those lifts you do using a chair. I just need to get taught similar really

i had a rest day today, could feel the lovely ache of muscle building when i woke this am. turned down the egg and spoon race at sports day! but had had to take a poundingly fast extra walk, deliciously without the children, to the post office depot for a parcel. which randomly turned out to be a sharps bin from healthcare at home.

<lets breath out, damn still no personal trainer:)>

Did my ifrst EA active sports training session today.
boy it's a decent bit tougher than the Wii Fit.
Enjoyed it a lot, started at the medium setting and found it a warming challenge but manageable. And I loved the cardio boxing, which I'd never tried before.
Am doing a 6 week challenge embedded int he program, aiming to do 4 days a wekk on this and one swim,,,swimming waiting until the goggles are made.

how's everyone?

Hello All

You have inspired me to get active again. My rhuemmy nurse did tell me I could start going to the gym several weeks back but I have been too anxious to do anything serious about it until now. Well it's that and swollen ankles.

So on Monday I tried Hatha yoga for the first time. Very, very gentle form of exercise which focused more on breathing and good posture. I really enjoyed it and it left me feeling energised. I think I will do more of the same on Saturday.

Yesterday I did 20 mins of exercise with a strength band in my back garden. I thought sod the neighbours (actually they might be inspired to join me one day) and just went for it. It was lovely exercising in the evening sun. Rest day today since I think I have found muscles I forgot about a long time ago.

Keep up the good work.

Good morning, all. Had a lovely session in the gym yesterday, trying some weight machines for the first time. I have not been too keen on them but wanted to consolidate what I had done with the PT the previous session. I particularly like the lateral pull down exercise where you get to fly like batman pulling down this bar from on top of you Smile . 15kg! There was a guy in the gym with dilated pupils and a zombie look who stared too much - I'm sure he was on speed - but apart from that going in the mixed gym area was ok. There were other women about.

I have neglected my cardio work somewhat since I have had this flare-up. I used to go swimming daily so I know I can fit it into my lifestyle. But I have lost the routine. Will aim to go swimming today even if I cannot do it on the way back from work and need a special trip to the gym.

Enjoy your exercise today.

Blink at gym zombie Alice, yikes!

I did a lower body/cardio Wii EA trainer session yesterday. Ah boy those reverse crunches near made me weep, my stomach thinks it's for eating thank, not pulling legs up from floor while lying down.

Rest day today, much needed. Keep up the neighbourhood show Agnes! How do you feel after first go-round in a while? I'm kind of stunned to feel aches other than joints, had forgotten there is such a good thing as good aches.

Hi All,

I haven't done specific exercise the last few days as I have had lots of running around to do for my dad. Then a marathon painting session in my daughters room till 3am. I slept till 10am the next day. Then I had a marathon washing day 3 loads for us and 2 for my dad. Then more painting and organizing making beds etc for my older daughter coming home. When I sat down later I was aching all over. Today I have taken it easy because I have overdone it the last few days. Well we could say my legs and arms got plenty of exercise Tongue Lorna x
